Concealer Review Part 4- Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Review, Full Analysis + Swatch in Light Medium

Heyyyy Beauties

Tarte released a new concealer a while back that became very popular called the ‘Shape Tape Concealer’. Today, I am going to be fully analyzing and reviewing the product. As always with my concealer posts, I am going to go over main headings including available shades (with a swatch), applicator quality, consistency/coverage/shelf life/amount,  lasting power/wear test, chemical (formula) analysis, marketing analysis, summary/overall review and where to buy links.

Available Shades/Shade Range

There are 10 shades available in the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer range. These range from lights to dark shades. I do think Tarte should have some more dark shades in the range.

Applicator Quality

The applicator of the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is a beautiful doe foot applicator. I really like the applicator because it applies product so precisely and evenly and also disperses the right amount of product. I really love when concealers have a doe foot applicator.

Consistency/Coverage/Shelf Life/Amount

img_7702

The Consistency of the concealer is thick and creamy as you can see in the above swatch picture. The Coverage of the concealer is medium to buildable full. It doesn’t take long to build up too full coverage and I love the coverage of this concealer and the finish is soooo nice.

The Shelf Life of the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is 6 months and the product comes with 10 ml (0.34) ounces of product. I don’t like this length for the shelf life because I find it is a bit short but then again concealer is a product that is used by most daily. The bottle is sooo much bigger than I thought it would be and it looks smaller online, I was surprised.

Lasting Power/Wear Test

To test the lasting power and wear of the product, I did a wear test in which I checked my face in the mirror and described what I saw in 2 hour intervals 4 times, equaling 8 hours of wear.

Wear Test with Time Intervals

Time Applied-  10.59 AM

Thoughts Upon Application- The applicator is so soft and nice and disperses product so evenly and precisely. The consistency is thick and easy to blend. The coverage is medium full and I really like the finish.

First Check In- 12.59 AMtwo hours later– The concealer has worn really good, is still fully on and the coverage is still full. There is a tiny bit of creasing but nothing bad at all. I really love the finish of this concealer and it still looks so good. After 2 hours, it has worn amazing.

Second Check In- 2.59 PM- four hours later– After 4 hours, the coverage is still full and none has worn off and my imperfections and still hidden and my skin looks good. There is no more creasing or settling than the last check in and everything looks really good.

Third Check In- 4.59 PMsix hours later– Again, the coverage is still full and none has come off. There is no more creasing or settling and everything looks the same as the last check in. After 6 hours, the wear is really good.

Fourth Check In- 6.49 PM- eight hours later– After 8 hours, the coverage is still full and there is hardly any creasing or settling and it looks the same as the last check in. The concealer has a long lasting power and wears really good. It still looks pretty much the same as when I first applied and the finish is still amazing.

Lasting Power/Wear Conclusion

img_7456

The Tarte Shape Tape Concealer has a really long lasting power and doesn’t come off throughout the day. It certainly passed my lasting power test. It also wears really good and keeps the skin looking good all day and doesn’t rub off coverage, so it also passed my wear test. I really like this concealer, it hardly creases or settles and has full coverage that doesn’t come off.

Chemical (Formula) Analysis

The Tarte Shape Tape Concealer formula contains 43 chemicals and is ranked by the Cosmetic Analysis Database as a ‘Recommended/Good’ formula. The Cosmetic Analysis Database analyses all individual chemicals in the formula and ranks them based on safety and functioning into 5 categories which contribute to the final formula reading; highly recommended, recommended, average, not recommended and to be avoided.  I did find that there are slight variations between different shades in the range but for the most part the formula is the same with only a few variations with shades.

img_7704

The ‘Recommended/Good’ ranking of the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is a result of 2 highly recommended chemicals, 22 recommended chemicals, 11 average chemicals, 5 not recommended chemicals and no to be avoided chemicals.

The bulk of the formula consists of recommended chemicals (22), meaning the formula consists mainly of recommended, high quality chemicals. The 2 highly recommended chemicals in the formula are Tocopheryl and Butyrospermum Parkii Butter Extract. Tocopheryl acts as a skin conditioning and antioxidant chemical in the formula and has multiple benefits including promoting wound healing, preventing infection, improving skin moisture, smoothing the skin and avoiding oxidation and rancidity, among more. Butyrospermum Parkii Butter Extract acts as an emollient (moisturizing agent) and has multiple benefits including promoting healing, binding moisture and softening and smoothing the skin, among more.

img_7455

There is only 5 not recommended chemicals and no to be avoided chemicals which is good because with such a long formula you would think there would be more not recommended chemicals, but again here is only 5 and the bulk of the formula contains high quality, good ingredients. Other than this, Phenoxyethanol is used as a preservative and contributes to the 6 -month shelf life of the product. Phenoxyethanol is one of the better preservative chemicals to use and the formula is paraben free. All in all, the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer has a very good formula with high quality ingredients.

Marketing vs Chemical + Physical Analysis

Is this product marketed correctly?

img_7455

In order to assess the accuracy of the marketing of the product, I looked up how Tarte describes and promotes it and then made up questions that would see if these claims were correct. Tarte markets the product as…….

“A vegan friendly, creamy concealer for radiant coverage and contouring”. They also add that “formulated without parabens, formulated without mineral oil, formulated without phthalates, formulated without sodium lauryl sulfates, formulated without gluten”. They also mention the following chemicals as skin vigorating ingredients; “shea butter, sunflower, peony, licorice root and vitamin E”

After reading this, I made up and set out to answer the following questions to assess marketing;

Is the product formulated without parabens, mineral oils, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates and gluten?

Tarte uses Phenoxyethanol as a preservative chemical instead of parabens, so the formula is paraben free and Tarte has marketed the ‘no paraben’ claim correctly. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, mineral oils, phthalates and no gluten chemicals. This means that Tarte have been completely accurate in stating that the product does not contain these chemicals.

img_7685

Is Shea Butter, Sunflower, Peony, Licorice Root and Vitamin E in the formula and what is their chemical name? Are these chemicals skin vigorating chemicals that have benefits?

Shea butter is in the formula as Butyrospermum Parkii Butter Extract which as I mentioned in the chemical formula section, is one of the best chemicals in the formula and returns a highly recommended reading by the Cosmetic Analysis Database. Shea Butter is a skin vigorating ingredient with benefits because it binds moisture, promotes healing and softens and smooths the skin. This means Tarte has accurately marketed Shea Butter and its benefits.

Peony is in the formula as Paeonia Lactiflora Bark/Sap Extract and maintains the skin in good condition, meaning it is a skin vigorating chemical with benefits so Tarte have marketed Peony correctly. Licorice Root is in the formula as Glycyrrhiza Glabra Extract and has multiple benefits including softening and smoothing the skin, increasing water content and moisture on the skin and helping lighten discomfort on the skin. This means that Tarte have accurately marketed licorice root because it does have benefits for the skin.

img_7689

Vitamin E is in the formula as Tocopheryl, which as I mentioned in the chemical section, is one of the two highly recommended chemicals in the formula. Tocopheryl has multiple benefits including improving skin moisture, smoothing the skin, maintaining the skin in good condition and removing small wrinkles, meaning it is infact a beneficial chemical that can have skin vigorating effects so Tarte have accurately marketed Vitamin E.

All in all, Shea Butter, Peony, Licorice Root and Vitamin E are all present in the formula and marketing these ingredients as beneficial is an accurate move by Tarte Cosmetics because all these ingredients do have benefits for the skin.
